Wired

Some of my dolls appear to have yellow upper limbs or be yellow from waist to knee. These dolls are wired. During assembly various thicknesses of chenille stems or covered wire, in scale to the doll, are inserted up into the torso and through the arm holes and locked together in the doll by twisting. These wires are covered by fibre stuffing, then chamois leather is sewn round in tubes then glued into the holes in arms, legs and torsos. The sewing ensures a strong doll who can assume many positions. I use chamois leather because it is the nearest in-scale equivalent to Victorian leather-bodied fashion dolls, many of which are to be found in museums as good as the day they were made, thanks to the strength of the leather which seems to suffer less damage from damp, sunlight or insect attack than any rag or felt doll.
